Hijazi Arabic linguistic data

Word order, tone, gender count, case marking, adposition direction, syllable structure, consonant inventory traits, vowel system, morphological alignment, script, register stratification, speaker count, and geographic area. Typological features are merged from URIEL+ (Mortensen et al.) and a curated set authored against descriptive grammars. Speaker counts come from Ethnologue and Glottolog. Geographic area is computed from the Asher 2007 world language atlas. Similarity scores combine genetic distance, typological overlap, and lexical-borrowing data.

Hijazi (the western coastal dialect) is more urbanized, with absorption of Egyptian and Levantine features through centuries of pilgrimage and trade contact in Mecca and Medina. Najdi (the central plateau dialect) is more conservative and Bedouin-influenced. Urban Hijazi often shifts q to ʔ in some words; Najdi keeps a g realization. The two are mutually intelligible.

The Hejaz region (Mecca, Medina, Jeddah) has been a hub for Muslim pilgrimage and trade for fourteen centuries, attracting permanent settlement from Egyptian, Levantine, and other Arab populations. Urban Hijazi reflects this cosmopolitan history, while Bedouin sub-varieties retain more of the conservative Arabian-peninsula features.
