Animations designed for comprehensible input

Characters are built to be understood visually, not just heard. When the baker says “bread” he holds the bread. When the guard says “no” he shakes his head. When someone mentions the lantern, it’s already lit behind them. Gestures, expressions, props, and the scene itself all carry the work a real human’s body language and surroundings do. You pick up language that sits just above your level without ever leaning on a translation.

Practice without the embarrassment

Too scared to speak to real humans? Practice here first, without the fear of messing up in front of a stranger. Fumble a sentence a hundred times in a row; nobody’s watching and the characters don’t care. By the time you step into the real world, you’ll do it with the confidence of someone who’s already had the conversation.

The native-beginner experience, on demand

Children learning their first language get something adults don't: a parent with infinite patience, quietly recasting every mistake. Beginner mode is that parent. You get proactive hints when you freeze, recasts when you mangle a sentence, slower pacing, and never a flash of frustration.

Listen, then speak: the way acquisition actually works

Second-language research has pointed at the same loop for forty years: comprehensible input going in, meaningful output coming back. The character speaks, gestures, and shows you what they mean. You respond, and the AI judges what you actually meant. A clumsy sentence that lands still counts; a perfectly-memorized one that doesn’t fit the moment doesn’t.

Real crosstalk practice, without needing another person

Crosstalk is when two people each stay in their own language and comprehension carries the conversation. It's a technique fluent bilinguals swear by. The catch: you need a patient partner. The games on mossyrune are that partner. Speak in the language you already know; the AI understands you and replies in the one you're learning. No scheduling, no awkwardness, no running out of someone's patience.

Difficulties from parent-patient to rapid-native

Beginner mode talks like a parent to a child: simple grammar, proactive hints, warm recasts, 2× patience. Advanced mode rambles like friends at a bar: full native register, slang, fillers, no correction. Intermediate sits between. Every scaffold inside every level is individually tunable. You dial each piece.

Hints you control, from nothing to a tutor at your shoulder

Most AI practice apps show you two or three canned replies to click on. The games on mossyrune don't. You decide how much help you see: nothing at all, single-word translations, keyword hints, full-sentence translations, or a companion interpreter that gives you grammar notes and response suggestions. Toggle any of it on or off mid-scene.

Control the pace, replay anything, and save anything to notes.

Slow any line to 0.5× or speed it to 2×. Replay any turn as many times as you need. Save any word, phrase, or full sentence to your personal notes without leaving the scene. The practice doesn't stop for a lookup; your vocabulary grows around it.

From patient parent to rapid native. Pick one, then tune.

Many games, many tones

Defuse a bomb before the timer runs out. Escape a dungeon by bribing a guard and flattering a ghost. More on the way, from heart-racing to heart-warming to outright silly. When you're this far into a situation, you'll forget you're practicing a language at all, and that's exactly when it sticks.

Real-world tasks with real consequences

Stop practicing “ordering off a menu” as a drill. Order a sandwich because the ghost is sad and warm food is what calms her down. Don't ask for directions as an exercise. Ask because a bomb timer is counting. Doors stay locked, gold stays in the chest, timers keep counting. The world doesn't move until the language does.

Ultimate replayability

Most games have more than one way to win. If the baker stumps you, try the grandmother. If bribing the guard isn't working, crack the combination lock. And because no conversation is scripted, no character ever says the same thing twice. Each replay feels new.

Characters with strong, distinct personalities

Every character is a different voice, not the same chatbot in a different outfit. Some are warm and welcoming. Some are stern and unforgiving. Some are rude and impatient. Some won't stop talking. Bakers, pharmacists, ghosts, guards, merchants, grandmothers, and every one of them feels like a different person. The real world is full of people who aren't like the last one, and neither is this one.

Situations you'll actually face

Spent months learning and never tried in a real environment? Or tried once and realized you couldn’t understand a word? The games on mossyrune drop you into the situations every language learner eventually complains about: a party where three people talk over each other, someone catching you off guard while you’re distracted with something else, a native speaker rattling off slang at a pace that leaves you blinking. The first time you hit these shouldn’t be the real time.

Life-like voices

Life-like voices

Voices are cast to match characters. The baker sounds weary, the ghost dramatic, the merchant jittery. Every character is voiced with ElevenLabs on every plan, free credits included. Nobody sounds like a phone assistant.

Grammar you'd never otherwise practice as a beginner

Textbooks feed you what they think your “level” is ready for. These games don't. You’ll talk about the past when the prisoner asks what you just found. You’ll give orders when you tell a guard to move. You’ll shift into a respectful register when you flatter a ghost. You’ll speak hypothetically when you plead. Every language handles these differently, and whatever yours uses, the situation reaches for it long before a curriculum would have unlocked it.

Every playthrough lands in your notes

Every conversation, every translation you peeked at, every hint you used, all saved automatically so you can review the whole playthrough afterward.

Medals and collectables

Win games, earn medals. Find hidden collectables inside each world. The reward isn't a streak counter you'll feel bad about breaking. It's something you actually did inside a game you actually played.

How much does it cost?

Games use credits, about one credit per minute of play. Every new account gets 20 free credits, enough for one full game. After that you can pick a monthly plan or buy a credit pack that never expires. Every game, language, and difficulty is open on every plan.

Do I need an account?

Yes, to play. The characters are powered by AI, so games need a free account; that is also where your credits live. The rest of mossyrune works without one.

Can I use my microphone?

Yes. Hold to talk (a key on desktop, long-press on mobile) and Whisper transcribes what you said straight to the character.

What if I can't think of what to say?

Turn on the interpreter panel. You'll see a translation of the character's last line, response suggestions, and a grammar note. Every scaffold is toggleable at any time.

What level should I be at?

Beginner mode works from A1+. Intermediate from B1+. Advanced from B2+. You can tune individual scaffolds inside each level.

Is this like Duolingo?

No. Duolingo asks you to pick the right translation. mossyrune asks you to hold a conversation. There are no multiple-choice buttons. You speak or type, and the AI understands what you meant.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes. Touch joystick for movement, drag to look, buttons for talk and interact. Install to your home screen as a PWA.

How long does a game take?

Most take about twenty minutes. Each game shows its length and credit cost before you start.
