The Immersionist

Restructure life around the language; go deep

Who you are

You have real time to invest, you're in it for the long haul, and you like the idea of living inside the language rather than studying it from the outside. You go deep on things you care about, and you're comfortable with delayed gratification.

Core insight

Language is caught, not taught. The more authentic content you absorb, the faster you acquire. Every hour of quality input now pays dividends later.

Stack

Engine Refold / AJATT framework Stage-by-stage immersion roadmap
Vocab Anki (sentence cards with audio) Systematic retention of mined vocabulary
Content Native TV/YouTube via Language Reactor Real input at comprehensible pace
Output italki community tutor (1x/week, intermediate+) Speaking when you're ready, not before

Start this week

Sentence mining. Watch 15 minutes of a show with dual subtitles (Language Reactor). Every time you encounter a sentence with exactly one unknown word, save it. Add 5–10 of these to Anki per day. Do this before touching anything else.

Timeline

Expect 3–6 months before conversations feel manageable. The payoff at 12–18 months is dramatic.

Tradeoffs

This approach requires self-direction and tolerance for ambiguity. You'll have stretches of “I have no idea what's happening” that last weeks. If you need quick wins to stay motivated, this path will frustrate you. And if your target language is rare, native content is scarce and the model breaks down.

If you're willing to do daily Anki, go Immersionist. If you'd rather skip flashcards entirely, go Naturalist.
